The BD 600 is a precise respirometric system manufactured by Lovibond/Aqualytic, designed for the determination of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD). This complete system is optimized for up to six measuring points and is suitable for process control or as a highly effective secondary test to the traditional Dilution Method, resolving many associated issues. The system is GLP compliant and specifically optimized for Biodegradability tests, including OECD 301F and standard BOD tests.
 
Measurement Principle and Accuracy
 
The BD 600 utilizes the manometric principle of respirometry. This method allows for precise BOD measurements by relating oxygen uptake to the change in pressure within a sealed vessel while maintaining a constant volume.
 
1. Operation: During the measurement, the microorganisms in the wastewater consume dissolved oxygen. This consumption is replaced by air oxygen from the gas compartment within the test bottle.
2. CO₂ Absorption: The carbon dioxide produced metabolically by the bacteria is chemically bound by potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution contained in a seal cup inside the bottle.
3. Pressure Measurement: This process results in a pressure drop directly proportional to the BOD value, which is measured by the mercury-free electronic pressure sensor and displayed directly in mg/l O₂.
A significant advantage of this system is that no sample dilution is required for measuring up to 4000 mg/l BOD, unlike traditional methods.

Display and Data Interpretation The BD 600 features a large, brilliant graphic display that provides results directly in mg/l BOD. Operators can easily interpret data points and trends through a graphical representation of the BOD curve shown on the screen. Each sensor head also features an integrated LED, allowing operators to visually confirm which sample data is currently displayed, reducing confusion and error potential.
Automation and Convenience Measurements are taken automatically and stored at regular time intervals in the sensor memory, meaning operators do not need to be present at the completion of the test, eliminating the need for mandatory weekend trips to the lab. The system includes an Autostart Function which ensures measurements begin only after the sample reaches the correct temperature, minimizing fluctuations that could skew results.
Data Management and Traceability The BD 600 unit includes a protected lifetime memory of 1 GB and supports data export via USB stick, SD card, or USB cable connection to a PC for further evaluation. The interface allows easy assignment of identification codes or sample names during setup, ensuring traceability throughout the measurement process. A supplied remote control allows operators to display measurement data without opening the incubator door, maintaining consistent sample temperature.
