Metrix UTM-9 Digital Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge
Product Overview:
The Metrix UTM-9 Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge is a highly capable and intelligent handheld Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) instrument. Operating on the ultrasonic measuring principle, the UTM-9 determines the thickness of a test piece by measuring the time it takes for a sound pulse generated by a transducer to travel through the material and reflect back from the inner surface.
This gauge is specifically designed for industrial and laboratory use. It is suitable for measuring materials that are good conductors of ultrasonic waves and have parallel top and bottom surfaces, including metals (such as steel, cast iron, aluminium, copper, brass, and zinc), plastics, ceramics, and glass. The physical body of the UTM-9 is often made from plastic.
Key Features and Functionality:
The UTM-9 is controlled by a microprocessor to provide quick and precise measurements. Key operational features include:
• Custom Velocity Settings: The instrument provides a wide sound velocity range, typically from 1000 to 9999 m/s. Users can manually set the required sound velocity or select from up to 11 preset material velocities, such as codes for Steel, Cast iron, Aluminium, Copper, Brass, Zinc, Quartz glass, Polyethylene, and PVC
• Calibration: The gauge features an inbuilt self-calibrator and a simple calibration function. A standard 4mm sample block is often included to verify the machine's accuracy. The calibration velocity is typically set to 5900 (m/s) for accurate reading.
• Display: Measurements are presented on a 4-digit backlit LCD display.
• Power Management: The unit is designed to conserve battery life via an automatic power off function. The stand-by current is low (e.g., 20uA).
Industrial Applications:
The UTM-9 is an essential tool for material integrity inspection across various heavy industries:
• Corrosion and Erosion Monitoring: It is widely used to monitor the degree of thinning caused by corrosion or erosion in tubes, pipelines, and pressure vessels during operation.
• General Inspection: The gauge accurately measures the thickness of diverse components, including plates, billets, bars, forgings, castings, extrusions, and various processed parts.
• Target Industries: Major sectors relying on this NDT tool include petroleum, chemical, metallurgical, shipbuilding, and aerospace. It is also used in railway maintenance, for instance, checking stiffener plates where thickness should be between 6mm and 11mm.
