A TDS meter functions by measuring electrical conductivity, which increases with the concentration of dissolved substances such as salts, minerals, and metals. The HI98302 converts this electrical conductivity measurement into a direct TDS reading in ppt (g/L).
Advanced Measurement Technology:
To ensure highly accurate readings, the HI98302 incorporates several key technological features:
Graphite Amperometric Sensor:
The meter utilizes an amperometric graphite electrode. This choice of material is crucial as graphite reduces the polarization effects often encountered with traditional two-stainless steel pin amperometric testers. The non-oxidizing nature of the graphite sensor results in better repeatability and accurate readings over time.
Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC):
TDS measurements are highly sensitive to temperature variations. The HI98302 addresses this through built-in Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC), functioning across its entire measurement range (0.0 to 50.0 °C).
Exposed Temperature Probe for Rapid Response:
An exposed temperature probe allows for an extremely fast and stable temperature measurement, enabling the meter to rapidly compensate for temperature variations in the sample or calibration solution, thereby ensuring high accuracy.
User Interface and Functionality:
The design of the HI98302 focuses on intuitive use and information clarity:
Multi-Level LCD Display:
The large, high-contrast LCD displays the primary TDS reading and the corresponding temperature simultaneously. The screen also includes indicators for stability (which disappears when a steady reading is obtained), a calibration tag (showing the meter has been calibrated), and a low battery indicator. At startup, the remaining battery life percentage is displayed for immediate feedback.
Simplified Operation and Setup:
The daily operation is handled by just two buttons: one for ON/OFF and one for calibration. For advanced configuration, a third button located in the battery compartment allows the user to select the displayed temperature unit (°C or °F) and customize the automatic shut-off time to conserve battery life (options include 8 minutes, 60 minutes, or disabled).
One-Point Automatic Calibration:
The meter features single-point automatic calibration at 6.44 ppt. Calibration is performed by pressing the dedicated 'CAL' button and submerging the probe tip into the standard solution; the meter automatically recognizes the solution and stores the calibrated value once stability is reached.
