• Sensor Technology: Temperature measurement typically relies on a reliable Platinum Resistance (PT-100) sensor for high accuracy.
3. Sample Observation and Comparison
For rigorous testing, the apparatus is equipped with features designed for clear viewing and verification of the melting process:
• Observation: The unit includes an eyepiece fitted with a magnifier, ensuring clear observation of the sample as it melts within the capillary. This visual clarity aids in precisely marking the melting point end point.
• Manual Verification: There is a specific provision to fix one standard glass thermometer alongside the capillaries at the top of the apparatus. A dedicated clamp is provided to secure the glass thermometer, allowing the operator to simultaneously observe and compare the sample temperature with an independent reference.
4. Typical Structure (Oil Bath Configuration)
While dry block options exist, many digital melting point apparatuses feature an oil bath system for uniform heating:
• Heating Medium: The unit typically contains a silicon oil bath, often having a capacity of around 200 ml, surrounded by a specialized oil immersion heater.
• Uniformity: An in-built magnetic stirrer helps ensure uniform temperature distribution throughout the silicon bath, providing a more consistent and accurate heating environment for the sample.
